"Do not judge others"
Why do demons reside within us?
Isn't it so that we can forgive others?
When we realize the evil in our hearts, we know that we have no right to judge the sins of others.
We are just as guilty because we have the devil in our hearts. How can we ignore that and judge others?
"Do not judge others"
It reminded me of a story from the Bible. When a woman was found guilty of adultery or something, and people demanded that she be stoned to death, Christ said, "Let anyone among you who is without sin cast a stone," and no one could cast a stone, so the woman was saved.
There are no 100% evil people among us, and no 100% good people. There is a good part, or what is called Buddha nature in Buddhism, even among people who are considered evil, and the devil resides among people who are considered good.
But where did this devil come from? In the end, it came from God. God is the creator of all things. God must have deliberately and for some reason sent the devil into our hearts.
Isn't that so that we can forgive others?
When we forgive the sins of others, the time will come when our own sins will also be forgiven.
And when we do not forgive the sins of others, the time will come when we will be judged for our own sins as well.
The God or Buddha within us, that is, the love and mercy in our hearts, forgive the sins of others, that is, the devils within others.
In other words, God forgives the devil. God forgives the devil with unconditional love.
However, the devil is very bad at this "unconditional love", and when it happens to him, he is really troubled. He is really overwhelmed. The devil can no longer be a devil.
So, the devil is defeated by this "unconditional love" attack, and God wins. In the end, love wins. After all, isn't the devil just God's "punchman"?
Dostoevsky, I'm sure, passionately explained in "The Brothers Karamazov" how this "unconditional love" is the most powerful weapon. When I read it, I had the illusion that I was reading holy scripture. I was troubled by the light of mercy, the light of love.
"So, when someone does something terrible to you, can you forgive them?"
Of course not. But it's also true that if I don't, I will be judged later.
I don't know what to do anymore, and there is nothing I can do, so the only thing I can do is to rely on God or Buddha.
That is Shinran's idea of relying on others, I personally believe.
Follow the guidance of love and mercy
